About this Speaker

Heather Clarke received her master’s degree and midwifery training from Columbia University and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Frontier Nursing University. For most of her career, Dr. Clarke combined her love of clinical practice with that of teaching nurse-midwifery students. She discovered pre and perinatal psychology in 2010 and continues to promote science that recognizes the unborn as a sentient being. She reminds clients and colleagues that the maternal womb is the unborn’s first environment that epigenetically can alter normal intrauterine growth and development. Dr. Clarke promotes a model of perinatal care that integrates trauma informed practices beginning preconception to assist couples optimize their health and begin to address their unresolved transgenerational, perinatal, birth and developmental traumas. The model assists pregnant women and families to build layers of support, practice prenatal bonding, choose gentle physiological birth and practice attachment through childhood. Dr. Clarke will join the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania later this summer. She plans to engage in clinical trials to study the efficacy of this model to improve overall perinatal outcomes, specifically to reduce race related maternal-child health disparities in the US. Finally, as the incoming President-Elect of ACNM, Dr. Clarke plans to promote this evidenced based model of care to the membership, colleagues and legislators to push for more attention and funding for healthcare at the beginning rather than at the end of life.
